Preparing Freight for Shipping

WHEN PREPARING GOODS FOR SHIPPING, THERE ARE PROPER PROCEDURES THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED.

FIRST THINGS FIRST – As always, when preparing to ship, look over a list of Prohibited and Restricted Items that are either prohibited or restricted from shipping to your particular country of choice.

The preparations begin by making the decision on the method of shipping – freight, large boxes or pallets?

WHAT IS PROPER PACKAGING?

Proper Packaging not only keeps all goods from being damaged, but it also protects those involved in handing a shipment from accidents that could occur from improper packaging. An example of improper packaging would be a pallet that was not wrapped tightly enough to keep it as one solid unit.

When Pack-n-Send, Inc., prepares a pallet for shipping, we add one by fours and begin by wrapping the pallet with cardboard, shrink wrapping, and finish by strapping with metal bands. We also will help coordinate any shipments that require special considerations.

THE IMPORTANT OF BILL OF LADING

Each piece of a shipment must contain a completed Bill of Lading. A Bill of Lading works as a receipt of freight services. It is a contract between a freight carrier and shipper, and is also a document of title. The Bill of Lading is a legally binding document. It provides both the driver and the carrier with all of the details that are needed to process the freight shipment and to invoice it correctly. The necessary information included on a Bill of Lading label would be:

DATE – The pickup date which makes tracking easier.
DESCRIPTION – list of what goods will be shipped.
PACKAGING TYPE – cartons, crates, etc.,
LOCATION – where goods are being shipped from and where goods are being shipped to.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – can include information on delivery notifications or any other note for carrier.

The importance of labeling all packages is to keep the shipments from being delayed. When shipments are being inspected, labels will avoid the possibility of authorities having to open up packaging.

Pack-n-Send, Inc., will complete the Bill of Lading for you.
